Holistic Dentist West Kelowna

What is holistic dentistry?

Though the title “Holistic Dentist" is not applicable to any dentist, (there is no official certification for this area of treatment in both Canada and the United States) West Kelowna Dentist Dr. Shauna Palmer has become quite experienced with patients who prefer dental treatment in a more natural way.
If you’re looking for a new dentist, you may have found quite a few dental practices that advertise themselves as “holistic dentistry” practices. What does this mean, and what’s the difference between holistic dentists and traditional dentists?
The key belief of holistic dentistry is that your overall (holistic) health is tied very closely to your oral health. This means that holistic dentists focus on treatments that are bio-compatible (non-toxic), and often work together with other healthcare professionals to ensure that your overall health is protected. The goal of holistic dentistry is to support and improve the body’s natural abilities to self-heal and regenerate.

What is the difference between holistic and traditional dentistry?

Each holistic dental office differs. Most holistic dental offices will provide you with all of the same services that you can expect to get from a traditional dental office, such as fillings and crowns, root canal therapy, regular teeth cleanings, and gum disease treatment.
However, most holistic dentistry practices also focus on other unique methods of treatment, such as a physiologic approach to orthodontics to open the airways, dental ozone therapy, and mercury removal. To learn more about the holistic dental services we offer at Health and Beauty Dentistry, contact us today.
One of the biggest differences between the two is that holistic dentists never use mercury-amalgam fillings. Mercury is a toxic metal, and with the rise of safer materials like glass ionomer cement (GIC) and dental composite, there is no need to use it for dental fillings.
With the potential health risks of mercury becoming well known, many people are seeking the removal of their silver fillings. At our dental office in West Kelowna, we are SMART certified (safe mercury amalgam removal technique) and can assist in safely removing silver fillings in a way that protects both the patient, and our staff, from mercury exposure.

What can I expect during my first holistic visit?

At your first visit, you’ll receive a thorough examination. We will discuss your goals for that visit, and whether any X-rays are recommended.  Dr. Shauna Palmer will ask you specific questions about your overall health, habits, and medical history so that we can develop a better understanding of your holistic health. Bringing any relevant medical records or other documentation to your appointment can help us do this.
Holistic dentistry is just as technologically advanced as traditional dentistry, if not more so. That’s why we offer such treatments as laser therapy at our office. Dental lasers can be used to to treat gum disease, oral infections, sensitive teeth and so much more. Laser treatment can reduce pain, is less invasive, and causes less discomfort than traditional dental tools.

What is SMART mercury removal and why is it important?

SMART is a certification provided through the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology or IAOMT. SMART stands for the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique.
Following a SMART procedure when dealing with amalgam removals ensures that the patient, the dental team, and the environment are well protected from the release of mercury during and after the treatment.
Complying with federal, provincial, and local regulations and using the latest technologies ensures that all necessary precautions are taken and that you are safe from all risks, from start to end of the procedure.
