What technology do we use?

Digital x-rays

Instant high-quality resolution x-rays in order to diagnose you better with significantly lower radiation exposure.

Intraoral camera

You can see what we see in your mouth magnified up on 42” LCD TV screens. This way you can truly be involved in your treatment decisions. This screen can also convert to cable TV for your viewing pleasure.

Laser

Lasers have a wide range of uses in the medical field. At our office, our diode laser is used to sculpt tissue in the mouth to more ideal cosmetic contours, treat or remove lesions like canker sores/cold sores or potentially dangerous lesions. It can also be used to desensitize sensitive teeth.

Last but not least, as part of our hygiene program, our hygienist is trained to use the laser to treat periodontal/gum disease painlessly and non-surgically.

Computerized TMD/headache treatment

We have a computerized jaw tracking/muscle tension evaluation system that helps us to diagnose and treat symptoms of TMD (temporomandibular disorder). TMD symptoms include but are not limited to: headaches/migraines, jaw joint pain or noise, ringing in the ears, dizziness, neck/back/shoulder pain or stiffness, postural problems, and many others. This computer system is also used to make the physiologic athletic mouthguards (see list above) and physiologic oral sleep apnea/snoring devices.

Computer-milled custom porcelain restorations

Now many custom permanent porcelain restorations are computer scanned and milled for a perfectly fitting restoration. It has become even more precise and efficient with the use of our Trios 3Shape Digital Scanner.

Digitally Scanned Impressions (say "goodbye" to goop!)

We now have the Trios 3Shape Digital Scanner which is used to take digital impressions of the teeth and intraoral structure. It is used to aid in the production of our ever-growing bridge + veneer work, orthodontics, our TMD/TMJ orthotics, sleep apnea appliances + snoring appliances, planning for surgical cases and implants, and diagnostic purposes. It is a very accurate and efficient way to "take an impression" as the scan can be directly emailed to our dental laboratories.

Perio Protect System

Dr. Shauna Palmer is offering Perio Protect® for periodontal gum disease treatment which uses a tray that is similar to a mouthguard, but it has a special sealing system to deliver medication below the gums. Medication is added into the tray and you wear it for a few minutes a day at home in between office visits.

The main advantage of Perio Protect® is that it can treat the bacteria in a comfortable way, minimizing surgery and antibiotics. The Perio Tray® is necessary because bacteria reproduce so quickly under the gums that is hard to control them between office visits.

Ozone Therapy

holistiholistic-dentistry-west-kelownac-dentistry-west-kelowna

Ozone therapy is a holistic way to treat various dental conditions. Ozone consists of three oxygen atoms bonded together. That one extra atom creates a gas with negatively charged particles. Why is this important? It’s because viruses, bacteria, and fungi are positively charged. Therefore, the ozone cancels out (kills) the organisms that cause many health issues, including dental diseases.

Ozone is:

  • Antibacterial
  • Antifungal
  • Antiviral

How does ozone therapy differ from antibiotics or antifungal treatments? The main difference is the side effects. While ozone has virtually zero, pharmaceuticals can have many adverse side effects, including:

  • Abdominal cramps and diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Yeast infections
  • Headaches
  • Allergic reactions (like swelling and itching)
  • Liver damage (certain antifungals).

The great thing about ozone therapy is that it’s not just good for your dental health – it’s good for your overall health. Medications, particularly antibiotics (which treat both tooth and gum infections), destroy all bacteria – good and bad. When this happens, your immune response is compromised. Additionally, a lack of sufficient healthy gut bacteria is linked to mental health conditions, like depression.

Ozone treatment can be used during nearly any kind of dental procedure, including:

  • Cleanings
  • Scaling and root planing (deep periodontal cleaning)
  • Dental surgery
  • Decay removal
  • Treatment of dental infections, including tooth and gum infections.
  • Muscle pain injection treatment

Ozone can also help desensitize your teeth, which is something many patients struggle with these days. If you have sensitive teeth, you know how wonderful it would be to bite into some ice cream or drink a cup of ice-cold water without feeling like your teeth are receiving an electric shock.
