Is Teeth Whitening Safe? Kelowna Dentist Explains

is teeth whitening safe

Teeth can become stained for a variety of reasons. This can be surface stains due to coffee or smoking, or deeper discoloration that comes with age and genetics. If you’re finding that you want to whiten your smile, you may be worried about the safety of the procedure. So, is teeth whitening safe? Before we get into whether teeth whitening is a safe procedure, it might be helpful to know what exactly teeth whitening is.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Simply put, teeth whitening is the process where you remove the stains from your teeth using a peroxide whitening gel or bleach. There are two different ways to whiten your teeth: intrinsic whitening, or extrinsic whitening.

  • Intrinsic whitening is a process by which a dental professional whitens the dentin found on the inner part of the two. Intrinsic discoloration can happen for several reasons: sustained use of medications, tooth trauma, aging, infection, or even illnesses you had as a child. The dentin will soak up hydrogen peroxide gel (the whitening gel) and become lighter.
  • Extrinsic whitening is a process that removes surface stains on the enamel. Your teeth can become stained for several reasons – smoking, drinking coffee or wine – and these stains can be removed by having your hygienist polish the enamel. You can also use whitening toothpaste to remove the surface stains on your teeth and achieve a whiter effect.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

In holistic dentistry, teeth whitening is considered a safe procedure. However, some products are better than others if you choose to do your teeth whitening at home, so here are a few things to remember:

Some Sensitivity is Normal

It is common to experience some sensitivity in your teeth for about 24 hours after you whiten them. If you find that your teeth are sensitive after whitening, take an over-the-counter pain medication for comfort. If the sensitivity continues beyond 24-hours, be sure to contact our office, as it can indicate another problem that may need to be corrected. Also, you can try desensitizing toothpastes in the whitening trays for 5-10 minutes after whitening and cleaning the gel off of the teeth and from the inside of the trays.  Be sure to clean the trays again after this procedure.

Yes, Peroxide is Safe!

The most common teeth whitening product is peroxide based, which is completely fine! Peroxide occurs naturally in the body and is a healthy way to whiten your teeth. Dental professionals have put a lot of work into making sure that teeth whitening gels are safe for your teeth.

Protect Your Gums

One thing to watch out for, however, is to make sure that the whitening gel that you use doesn’t come into contact with your gums, as it can damage the sensitive tissues.

Start with Healthy Teeth

You’ll get the best whitening results if you start with a mouth full of healthy teeth. If you have damage or cavities in your teeth, you may find that the whitening product won’t work as effectively, and may cause more pronounced sensitivity issues as damage.

If you have any concerns about the teeth whitening products that you may want to use at home, the best course of action is to get in to see your dentist about whitening your teeth in the office. They will have better information on which products will work best for your specific situation.
